Wilmington & DHL
****See our solution for how we can make Wilmington a model for sustainable economic development****
On May 28, 2008, German-owned Deutsche Post unexpectedly announced that it was pursuing plans to outsource its DHL Express air freight services in the U.S. to competitor UPS. This news brought a devestating blow to Wilmington, OH, home to DHL’s air freight hub which is now slated for closure.
Since May 28th, Clinton County has been bracing itself for a catastrophic economic meltdown, the magnitude of which is unprecedented in U.S. history: 8,200 jobs directly eliminated, an estimated 2,000 more indirectly affected.
For this small town of 12,000 and the surrounding county, surviving this economic storm has seemed impossible. But this great crisis has presented Clinton County with the opportunity to become a model and testing ground for technologies and development strategies that will lead Ohio’s and America’s economy through the 21st century.
