Since 2007, the Clinton County Regional Planning Commission, along with many partners, has run a Community Attitude Survey in an effort to understand community attitudes and thoughts. This year’s survey was designed specifically for young professionals by Ohio University’s School of Communications, Ohio University’s Sociology Department, Wilmington College, the Wilmington-Clinton County Chamber of Commerce and the City of Wilmington along with the CCRPC and Energize Clinton County.  The development of a survey resulted from a first ever Young Professionals Roundtable meeting hosted last year by Mayor Randy Riley, where the need for an objective and scientific assessment was highlighted.  “Our goal is to make sure that Wilmington appeals to all generations of residents, with your help, we can make this happen,” said Randy Riley in his invitation to stakeholders to take the survey.

The research team was lead by Dr. Anna Wiederhold, Dr. Laura Black, Dr. Ted Welser of Ohio University and Dr. Corey Cockerill of Wilmington College.   “We are using a combination of surveys and focus group interviews to investigate the factors influencing young people (age 18-40) in their decisions regarding where to live, work, and spend their money,” said Dr. Wiederhold (a Wilmington High School alum) who recently received her PhD and whose dissertation focused on Wilmington and this process.

To date the survey has been completed by over 300 local citizens, it is open to all ages and everyone countywide is encouraged to take the short survey.  If you’ve not taken the survey, take it now:

The purpose of the UCEAO Partnership Recognition Awards program is to highlight projects and organizations in Ohio that:

• Exemplify the UCEAO goal of collaboration between the public and private sectors, including the academic community;
• Add value to the state’s economic development efforts; and,
• Promote the development and deployment of advanced energy technologies.

For 2013, the UCEAO chose to recognize local and regional organizations that are making a difference in their communities. Energy issues are an important component of each recipients’ programming; at the same time, they are interwoven with broader themes of sustainability, environmental protection, and economic development.

We share this recognition with the University of Dayton, the Clinton County Regional Planning Commission, the Toyota/Audubon TogetherGreen Fellowship program, and Dropoly.com for supporting our community energy efficiency efforts.

The GreenCityBlueLake Institute is the sustainability center of The Cleveland Museum of Natural History. It believes that on rapidly urbanizing planet Earth, the key to sustainability is the development of ecological cities where people can live healthy lives with reduced environmental footprints. GreenCityBlueLake wants to help make Northeast Ohio a leader of this transformation — a metropolitan area that demonstrates how urban revitalization can work with nature.

The GreenCityBlueLake Institute works by thinking and doing. It researches the best solutions, brings people together and participates in community initiatives, conducts demonstration projects, communicates the best ideas, and advocates publicly for change.

This is the third year that UCEAO has presented the awards.  In 2011, LEEDCo and Turning Point Solar – two major Ohio-based renewable energy projects – were honored.  In 2012, awards were given to the Ohio Aerospace Institute (OAI) and the Center for Automotive Research at The Ohio State University, entities that are ensuring Ohio’s competitive advantage in two industry sectors of critical importance to the state.  At the same time, The University of Toledo received a special award for serving as the first UCEAO Host Institution.

The ECC and CCRPC plans and programs implemented since 2008 have achieved various milestones, including development of one of Ohio’s most successful buy local campaigns, an award winning energy efficiency program in collaboration with the University of Dayton, a young professional development program called Clinton Community Fellows highlighted by MSNBC and a renewed focus on local visioning noted as a model for rural towns in testimony to the US Senate Agriculture Committee.  ECC and the CCRPC will receive the award formally in April at an Awards Luncheon at the APA’s National Planning Conference in Chicago.  This national award builds on recent accolades, including being recognized as a Top 3 ‘Best Innovation in Economic Development’ by the Ohio Economic Development Association (OEDA) in 2012.

About Clinton County Regional Planning Commission (CCRPC)
